How to Attack with the 4-4-2?
The 4-4-2 utilizes the balanced shape with the mobile CMs to create passing options through the middle. Having the ball constantly moving to reach either ST by playing it through the middle allows you to use the L1 Speed Boost when you're on the last man or play a first time Lobbed Through Ball off the shoulder of your ST to their partner or one of the Wide Midfielders allows you to break defensive lines while maintaining your defensive structure. In transition you can use your Deep-Lying Playmaker to play Long Balls to your wide midfielders who will be making inside runs and put them through on goal. The Long Ball Pass PlayStyles+ is important to have on at least one CM.
How to Defend with the 4-4-2?
The way to defend with the 4-4-2 is to do your best to maintain the shape of your defensive line. When your opponent is attacking through the middle use your LCM to screen the ball carrier and cut passing lanes rather than tackle. When your opponent is attacking down the flanks, use your RM/LM to track back instead of your fullbacks. Pulling your players out of position to press the opponent is the biggest mistake that we need to avoid as that opens gaps which can be exploited. Do your best to screen the carrier, read the next move and attempt to cut passing lanes, only make a tackle if the ball carrier is right in front of your controlled player.
