Trade in the deep tracking back of your wide midfielders with dynamic runs in the middle of the park, late runs into the box and some of the most fluid attacking AI movement from players seen outside of the meta 4-5-1 formations with this 4-2-2-2 narrow.
Let's take a look at the custom tactics, instructions and roles that you need to make the most of this formation in EA FC 26.

How to attack with the 4222 in FC 26?
There are two avenues of attack with the 4-2-2-2. The first one is to sit back and retrieve the ball deep in your own half, use your Deep-Lying Playmaker to thread a through ball between the lines to your CAMs and cut inside the box for that top corner finesse shot.
Make sure your CAMs are operating with at least the base Finesse Shot PlayStyle because that will be your bread and butter with this tactic. With reduced goalkeeper movement we can make the most of these finesse shots right at the edge of the box to beat the keeper.
The second way to build up your play is through the second man runs that your CAMs, False 9 ST and Box Crasher CDM will be making. With both STs on a role that has them drop deeper, it pulls your opponent into a higher line, especially if they commit with their CBs. Use your ST as bait and then play the ball in behind to the extra man running in behind that will be through on goal.
If you are being pressed by a high line and can't beat the offside trap then you can manually trigger your fullbacks to make a forward run and beat that trap and then use them to cut it back to the numerous attackers that will be crashing the box or even sitting at the edge of it.
How to defend with the 4222 in FC 26?
Without the defensive tracking of the RM/LM that we are used to you will be quite vulnerable to balls played in behind to wingers, the key is to not panic and overcommit your defenders into a meaningless press.
This formation isn't built for you to press high up the pitch. Rather, it banks on you manually pulling your CAMs and advanced CDM back into place. Your Deep-Lying Playmaker will be sitting in front of your CBs so use them to make last ditch challenges instead of committing CBs, they should only be interacted with once your opponent has made their way into your penalty area.
Use your STs to press the opponent up high, if you can cause overturns there then there will be more than enough attacking options at your disposal to make the most of it. Once that first line of press is beaten it is time to retreat and wait for the right opportunity to counter.

Is the 4-2-2-2 the best tactic in EA FC 26?
There is an argument to be made for the 4-2-2-2 to be the best tactic in EA FC 26.
While it is not as straightforward as the 4-5-1 or the 4-4-1-1, the sheer customization and variety that you get with a single tactical setup, both in how you set up off the ball and the type of runs your attacking AI makes puts this custom tactic up there with some of the best.
