How to Attack with the 4222
The power of this tactic comes form using the different workrates and player profiles to make runs during transition. The RST should be your tall Striker, who will drift wide and hold up the opponent's LB and LCB, while your RCAM on Free Roam will tuck inside and be able to dribble and make chances through that middle space. On the other side, your LCAM sitting on the edge of the box is free to make those long range Finesse/Trivela/Power Shots. One CDM should have High/High workrates to make late runs into the box for the extra pass. Lastly, your tall RST can be used for hold up play or play balls in behind to beat the drop back before it has a chance to set in.
How to Defend with the 4222
With the defensive width and the natural shape of the 4-2-2-2 it defends how you would with a 4-4-2 shape, which is the most stable and preferred shape in defense as it gives you a solid cover over your backline to absorb incoming pressure with CDMs cutting passing lanes. The key is to have one of your CDMs on a Medium/High workrates so that there is always at least one player in midfield, even in transition tracking back and staying with the opponent's runners. The Step Up instructions on the fullbacks also makes sure that they are sticking with their man and not allowing them to slip away for counterattacks. If you have the Relentless PlayStyles+ on your CDMs it would be worth turning on Aggressive Interceptions with them as well.
