EA Sports has finally dropped the official FC 27 Gameplay Deep Dive, and it is clear that the development team is looking to raise the skill gap across the board. From defending to attacking, almost every major mechanic from FC 26 has been tweaked or completely overhauled to reward manual inputs over AI assistance.

If you are looking to get a head start on the new meta, here is a breakdown of the five biggest gameplay changes coming to EA FC 27.

1. AI Defending Nerfed, Manual Defending Buffed

One of the most noticeable changes in FC 27 will be how defending works, specifically in Competitive gameplay modes like Ultimate Team.

EA is heavily nerfing AI Auto-Tackles. AI-controlled defenders will no longer automatically attempt to win the ball when a dribbler gets close. Instead, they will focus on positioning and holding the line, forcing you to manually switch and initiate the tackle yourself. Teammate Contain has also been adjusted so that AI teammates mark the ball carrier from a slightly longer distance.

To balance this out, manual defending has received a massive buff. When you take control of a defender, you will notice increased jockey speed and a much wider reach for stand tackles and interceptions compared to the AI. The goal is to heavily reward players who read the game and manually position their defenders.

2. Corner Kicks Completely Overhauled

Corner kicks are no longer just about aiming a cursor and hoping for the best. In FC 27, when you aim your delivery, the camera will briefly shift toward the box. During this window, players no longer automatically lock onto the best position; you must manually control an attacker to jostle for space, time your run, and attack the ball yourself.

Because crosses and corners are much less assisted this year, headers will be harder to land cleanly, but they will be far more accurate and rewarding when you do.

3. Smarter, Manual Creative Runs

Attacking Spatial Awareness has been upgraded so AI attackers make smarter, contextual curved runs that stay onside while bending around the defensive line. However, the biggest change comes to manually triggered runs.

Instead of running straight down the pitch indefinitely, you can now trigger Pass & Follow or Curved Runs that exploit open space. The catch is that manually triggered runs will now only continue for a limited distance before the player stops and returns to their position, meaning you have to actively manage your attacks.

4. PlayStyles Rebalanced

In FC 26, the meta was often dictated by who had the best PlayStyles rather than who had the best base attributes. EA is looking to close that gap in FC 27 by making raw stats matter again.

Massive meta staples like Finesse Shot, Rapid, Quick Step, and Low Driven have all been nerfed or reworked so that the speed, power, and spin of the ball rely much more on the player's core attributes.

You can read the complete breakdown of every tweak in our Full List of PlayStyle Nerfs and Buffs in EA FC 27.

5. Off-Balance Dribbling

A brand-new mechanic coming exclusively to Next Gen consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2) is Off-Balance Dribbling.

Driven heavily by a player’s raw Balance, Agility, and Dribbling attributes, this feature allows elite dribblers to ride tackles and maintain possession under heavy physical pressure. If an agile player is hit by a shoulder challenge, bump, or hard collision, they will enter a new off-balance animation.

While they may look like they are stumbling or losing their footing, you will actually retain full control of the player. As long as you have the right stats, you can take a touch mid-stumble in any direction to escape the defender and keep the attack alive. This is a massive buff for smaller, highly technical players who previously lost the ball the second a physical defender made contact.
